Special Features of Community Surrounding District: Casa Grande, Arizona, is ideally located in the Sonoran desert. Casa Grande combines modern city living with rural heritage and old-fashioned values. Founded in 1879 and incorporated in 1915, Casa Grande is strategically located at the intersection of I-10 and I-8. Named after the famous Hohokam Indian ruins, 20 miles to the northeast, Casa Grande is a dynamic and growing city. Housing available in Casa Grande ranges from new single-family subdivisions to custom homes. The city is a full-service community with manufacturing, retail trade, agriculture, mining, government and tourist-related employment. Casa Grande offers a broad range of facilities and activities including museums, library, bowling lanes, fitness and racquet club, public swimming pool, theaters, area golf courses, archery range and rodeo facilities. The city of more than 25,000 people is situated between Phoenix and Tucson. Rich in tradition and cultural diversity, Casa Grande is the largest community in Pinal County. The economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing and commerce. Within the city of Phoenix and the surrounding communities, sports spectators attend professional basketball, baseball, hockey and football events including the Phoenix Suns, Arizona Diamondbacks, Cactus League Spring Training, Phoenix Coyotes and Arizona Cardinals. Temperatures in the seventies provide the perfect weather for the PGA’s Phoenix Open Golf Tournament held in January. The urban area offers a variety of entertainment opportunities including opera, ballet, rodeo, museums and zoos. The Grand Canyon State is a place of nonstop activities and startling natural beauty. Located within easy driving distance are Mount Lemmon (2-1/2 hours) and the White Mountains (3-1/2 hours) where residents can participate in winter sports, fishing, and camping. Also within a day’s drive to the south is Mexico and to the west, the coast of California. Additional Information: We have made a commitment to learn from schools around the country that have adopted a “No shame, no blame, no excuses” attitude toward student academic achievement. We have also made a commitment that neither poverty nor ethnicity will stop our students from succeeding. While we know that many of our students face significant challenges in their homes and neighborhoods, all of us, undoubtedly, share the vision that these challenges should not be a guarantee of school failure. Throughout history, individuals have, against the odds, risen from overwhelming challenges and achieved great success, in many cases crediting those challenges for their achievements.
